Demetris Vattis
Biography


Demetris Vattis was born in Lysi in 1963 and acquired his first camera in 1976. It was a Kodak was given to him as a gift by his father who was working in the Gulf at the time. When he graduated from high school, Vattis worked in various fields in order to earn his living. At the age of 25 he decided to follow his heart, took his savings and left for Athens to study photography . He enrolled at ΑΚΤΟ school, where his tutors were Alkis Xanthoulis and Andreas Smaragdis. He spent his afternoons at Smaragdis studio in Agia Paraskevi, so as to observe and learn. On his return to Cyprus in1989, he was hired by the "Periodiko" magazine. "Photography was merely one more medium for reporting the news," he says. "Magazines functioned as newspapers, only with better quality paper." In 1991, "Phileleftheros" publishing group launched "Selides" magazine and offered Vattis a place on the team. "Selides" was the first Cypriot magazine to shake-up established forms and rules in press photography. The magazine was a pioneer, giving rise to a new era. Vattis has since been a member of the team at "Phileleftheros", working for all the weekly and monthly magazines of the group (Omikron, Omikron Άντρας, Cosmopolitan etc). "Fashion Shoot" is his first solo exhibition, which includes stills from fashion editorials for "Omikron" magazine, that were taken between 2006 and 2010.
