DISY – EPP MEP Lefteris Christoforou has proposed to the European Commission that it launch a single European student card to support EU students, he told a press conference on Thursday.
He said he had submitted his proposal in July and that the response was that it was feasible.
“I asked that there be a student card that will allow every European student to enjoy significant benefits to help them cover their educational and social needs,” he said.
Such a card could include exemption from VAT for purchases, various discounts for the purchase of services and goods as well as for transportation, the MEP added.
“This would give European students the social and economic support that will allow them to pursue their undergraduate and post-graduate studies.”
He said the European Commission would study the issue further with a view to implementation in 2020.
In voicing his satisfaction with the Commission’s response, Christoforou noted that the EU had an obligation to support students, education and particularly tertiary education.
