How to protect large birds from colliding into power lines was the subject of a seminar organized on Wednesday by the Game Service and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

The seminar “Bird electrocutions and collisions on electricity power lines: impacts and solutions and networking” was held at the EAC’s offices in Nicosia and attended by participants from Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Israel and Cyprus.

It looked at the programmes implemented in Spain and Bulgaria as well as the programme being implemented in Cyprus by the Game Service and the EAC “Life – Conservation and Management of the Bonelli’s Eagle population in East Mediterranean”, which is funded by the EU.

That programme centers on the protection and management of the population of the Bonelli Eagle (Aquila Fasiata) in the eastern Mediterranean and especially in the four special protection areas for birds in the Republic of Cyprus.

It covers Paphos forest, the Papoutsa-Madari area, the Troodos area and the Pentaschinos valley in Larnaca.

Taking part in the seminar were officials from various Cyprus government services such as the Forestry Department, the Environment Service, the Transmission System Operator and the Energy Service.
