There has been a steady increase in the number of Cypriots benefitting from the EU’s Erasmus+ programme.
According a European Commission factsheet on Erasmus+ for 2017, a total of 4003 participants in 163 Cypriot projects benefited from mobility in higher education, vocational education and training, school education, adult learning and youth for a total grant amount of €7m.
Cooperation between schools, universities, youth organisations, public authorities and enterprises helps create more relevant and modern education and youth systems, with stronger links between the worlds of work and education, it said.
Erasmus+ also supported a number of Cypriot organisations:
- 9 in capacity building projects in the field of education and youth
- 12 in collaborative partnerships in the field of sport
- 8 in cooperation projects between higher education institutions and businesses (knowledge alliances) and vocational education and training institutions and business (sector skills alliances)
- 9 in social inclusion through education, training and youth projects
As regards higher education, the top three sending institutions in Cyprus are the University of Cyprus, the University of Nicosia and the Cyprus University of technology.
The top three receiving countries are Greece, Spain and the UK.
The number of outgoing students and trainees has risen from 2016 in 2009/2010 to 635 in 2016/2017.
The number of incoming students and trainers is also up, from 452 in 2009/2010 to 1077 in 2016/2017.
