An NGO is urging the public to reach out and help clean up the coast on September 21, which is the International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The campaign slogan is ‘potavristou opou mporis’ that is in Greek—reach out where you can.

The aim is to mobilise young and old to clean the beaches of rubbish, particularly plastic which ends up in the sea with horrific environmental repercussions.

Xenia Loizidou, president of AKTI project and research centre said organisers had turned to the Cypriot dialect to urge the public to join in.

“Whether you are on a beach or on a boat on that specific day take action. Stretch out you hand – potavristou – and collect whatever rubbish you see in front of you such as plastic and glass bottles or glasses, plastic bags, soft drink cans, cigarette butts etc,” she told Radio Active.

Then each individual should count the rubbish collected and post it on social media with the hashtag #potavristou.

This will allow the creation of records on how much rubbish ends up in the sea off Cyprus.
